Let God Do the Building

READ
1 Chronicles 17:7-12
CONSIDER
David wants to build something for God, but God tells David, "I’m going to build something for you." God isn't talking about a house made of bricks; He’s talking about David’s family and his future. This is a tough pill for most of us to swallow because we love being in control. We have our five-year plans and career goals and ideas of what a "good life" looks like and how to get there; but a truly spiritual life starts when we stop trying to be the architects and start trusting God’s design.
David wants to build a house for God because he thinks that’s what God wants, but did you notice what’s missing in David’s plan? He never asks God what God wants for himself or for David! It’s so easy to project our will onto God. Sometimes, we do this with pure motives...and sometimes not so pure. Either way, as we see with David, the key is to ask God for His will and then follow Him in it.
REFLECT
Can you think of a time you projected your will onto God? When you said, “God, this is what you want,” instead of asking, “God, is this what you want?”
Is there anything like that in your life right now? If so, there’s good news! You can flip that statement into a question. The important next step is to listen for His response, then follow it faithfully.
PRAY
Jesus, change my heart so all I want what You want. Amen.
