I'll Take it from here

Numbers 20:2-11
CONSIDER
The Israelites are thirsty, and they’re letting everyone know it. Moses and Aaron are tired of the complaining, so they go to God and he gives a simple instruction: "Take the staff. Gather the people. Speak to the rock." Trust the Lord, speak his word, and watch Him provide.
But Moses doesn’t do that. Maybe he’s frustrated, or maybe he’s just relying on muscle memory from the last time water came from a rock. Instead of speaking, he strikes the rock. Twice. Here’s the thing: water still flows. People and animals get their fill. Seems like a happy ending, right? If you stop the story there, you might think Moses’ obedience was "close enough."
But it wasn’t.
Moses took matters into his own hands. In that moment, his actions say, "God, I’m not sure You’re going to come through just by speaking, so I’ll handle this part."
REFLECT
It’s the temptation we all face—to do God’s work, but to do it in our own power because we’re impatient or angry or we just can’t relinquish control.
But obedience isn't just about the result; it’s about the posture of the heart.
We talk a lot about motives in our tradition. Fruitfulness without faithfulness misses the point. God can provide even when we miss the mark. God wants our full trust, not just our "good enough" effort.
PRAY
God, forgive me for the times I’ve said, "I’ll take it from here." I want to do exactly what You ask, the way You ask it. Help me trust You enough to obey even the small details. Amen.
