When Jesus Doesn't Make Sense

READ
John 14:1-14

CONSIDER

It’s been about three years since Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River, signaling the beginning of his earthly ministry. In that time, he has called a dozen men to follow him closely, training them up to lead a revolution that will change the world. He has preached to thousands, performed dozens of miracles, privately and quietly impacted the lives of dozens more, and literally embodied the coming together of heaven and earth.

Now, in less than three days, he will be betrayed, arrested, tried, tortured, killed, buried, and raised from the dead. Not only that, but this is all so anyone who has a relationship with him can access the same power and freedom all his preaching, leadership, and miracles foreshadowed.

REFLECT

The twelve disciples’ whole lives have been dedicated to going where Jesus goes. Now, he’s saying they can’t join him, at least not for a while. He reason is hard to understand, but so is much of his teaching. So, I suppose we shouldn’t give the disciples too hard a time for having difficulty wrapping their heads around what Jesus is saying.

So, let’s join them in their inquiry. Let’s allow ourselves to wonder, where did Jesus go? Why did he need to go when he did? What would happen while he was gone? How long is “a little while”?

As you consider what this might have felt like for the disciples, reflect on your own life. Have you ever asked, “Where did Jesus go? Why did he go when he did? What will happen before I see or hear him again? How long until that day?”

PRAY

Lord, I admit there are times when I can't understand why you do things the way you do. Remind me when I get confused, worried, or overwhelmed that you are faithful. Jesus, encourage me when I struggle and find me faithful, too. Amen.
