Week 9 | Wednesday

Read: Matthew 6:25-34

Several years ago, we decided to sell our house. It had not appreciated in value in seven years, and our neighborhood was declining. We had to sell it for a loss and finance the difference, or stay there and continue to pay down the balance, hoping to stay ahead of the decreasing property value.

We prayed about what to do. God sent a gentleman from our church who, without knowing our situation, offered for our family to live in his house rent-free while he worked on selling it.

So, we moved in, praying it wouldn’t sell too quickly while also praying that our home would sell super-fast. Six months later, our house sold for a five-figure loss. We financed the difference and paid it off while we lived in this rent-free home. Also, while we lived there, we paid off all our college debt, purchased life insurance, and started saving for retirement.

After we had been living there just over a year, I officiated a funeral for an old friend. While chatting at the luncheon about our situation, a friend told me she’d be selling her house in about six months. She encouraged me to drive by with my wife to see if we liked the neighborhood. We did…and we did.

We visited her, toured the house, prayed, and told her we were interested. Two months later, the gentleman who owned our house called me and said we needed to be out by July 1. We closed on our new home in May, almost two months before we needed to vacate.

I have been prone to worry about money most of my life. During this season of my life, I saw God’s provision on full display through: the generosity of the gentleman from our church, selling our old house, the ability to pay off a bunch of debt, saving for a down payment on our new home, and investing in our future.

The greatest of all He provided, though, was peace. I have become more generous because we stepped out in faith, consistently trusted Him, and continued to give Him praise through the process.

This is a rare kind of story. Maybe. Maybe it happens more often than we realize. God wants to write a rare kind of story in your life, too. How can you step out in faith, trust Him, and give Him praise?
