Asking Without a Question

Asking Without a Question
READ
CONSIDER
In the Lord Prayer, Jesus starts with a proclamation that God is holy. “Hallowed” actually means “sanctified,” which can also be understood as “holy.” Then, he submits to God’s authority by declaring the coming of God’s kingdom and will.
Next, Jesus kind of asks for things...but his prayer is not framed with questions. He makes statements. “Give us this day... forgive us out sins...” Jesus isn’t like a toddler who hasn’t learned to share, saying, “Gimme!” This is a request, but it is recorded as a statement. In a way, Jesus is making a request, but he’s doing so with the absolute confidence that God will provide. His faith is such that he doesn’t have to wonder if God will come through. Therefore, he can make a request without a question.
So, why does he ask? If he knows God will provide, isn’t this unnecessary?
God wants a relationship with us and relationships require communication. We need to express our wants and needs to one another. That’s true in dating, marriage, parenting, and friendships...and it’s true with God.
REFLECT
It is okay to tell God what you want. It’s okay to ask for things with confidence that he will deliver – to follow Jesus’ example. It’s not demanding. It’s faith. Yes, God knows what you want AND He wants you to tell Him.
PRAY
Holy Spirit, I know there is no right way or wrong way to pray. Still, make me attentive to the way I pray this week. Thank you for hearing my wants and my needs. Thank you for providing. Thank you for wanting a relationship with me. Just like the disciples said to Jesus, “teach me how to pray.” Amen.
