John 17:17

CONSIDER

The New Living Translation of the Bible often embeds definitions right into the text. John 17:17 is a great example of that. It says, Make them holy by your truth...

To sanctify someone is to make them holy. Only God can sanctify. Only he can make someone holy. So, what does that mean?

Some call it “being set apart,” and it’s a process. We call it, in the Church of the Nazarene, a “Journey of Grace,” meaning it’s a process in which God is the active agent. It’s all his work. Our role is to respond to what He is doing in our lives through the Holy Spirit, thanks to Jesus sacrifice on the cross.

This is a process and it is never totally done, but you do reach a point when you favor living God’s way more than you favor living life your own way.

REFLECT

Sanctification is what we call a second work of grace. It is the process of becoming more like Jesus and less like the world.

Be honest before the Lord. In what way(s) do you still favor what you want over what God wants? Think particularly about the things you say, think, and do when no one can see or hear you. That’s often when the quiet proclivities come to the surface.

Ask the Holy Spirit to sanctify you, to set you apart and make you more like Jesus, in those areas.

PRAY

Holy Spirit, come into my life. Show me what needs to be set apart for you and take it from me. I want to favor you more than I favor sin. Purify my heart. Cleanse my mind. Renew my spirit. Amen.
