CONSIDER

We live in a time that has been called the “post-truth” era, meaning we used to have a shared understanding of facts and opinions, true and false, real and fake, but the line that separates those has become so thin or blurry that, to many, it has become very hard to see.

The things you abide in will influence the way you understand the world around you. Imagine you lean one way politically and your neighbor leans the opposite. Your feed, inbox, and search engine will be filled with leanings that match your preference. Your neighbor's will be filled with leanings that match his (or hers).

Then, when you talk about the big thing in the news one day, you have one set of facts and he/she has something completely different. Is one true and one false? From each of your perspectives, yes! The problem is, you will each think the other is wrong.

REFLECT

We have to be incredibly discerning in this post-truth era. Everything we process must be stacked up against the one truth that never changes – the message Jesus came to proclaim. The word of God!

Ask the Lord to search your heart – and your phone or computer or television – this week and look for bias. Ask him to search your mind. Pray that he will protect you for unity so the world will know Jesus because a divided world needs a unified Church.

PRAY

Father God, our world is struggling, in part, because the very idea of truth is unraveling. I know your word is truth. Anchor me in your message and make me a vessel for your compassion, grace, and love. Amen.
